Greatness of the Govinda Name
The Supreme Lord here reveals the greatness of the Govinda name, and why this particular name is among His favorites from among the many names that He is known as.
(Below is the revelation as extracted from Māḻikā, given by Śrī Guru Lord Jagannātha in Oḍiā; translated into English for the benefit of Mankind)
Original Transliteration
govinda govinda nāma jāṇa ।
govinde rahichi bahu jñāna ॥1॥
govinda govinda ḍākile re ।
govinda śuṇiba tāhā gīre ॥2॥
govinda puruṣottama sāra ।
govinda nāma re vistāra ॥3॥
govinda govinda boli kahi ।
indra brahmā ye rudra tahim̐ ॥4॥
govinda nāma re bhoḻa sāra ।
heu thānti ṭi parakāra ॥5॥
govinda nāma ṭi tahim̐ jāṇa ।
govinde hoi ye puruṣottama ॥6॥
puruṣottama ṭi āmbhe kahi ।
śrī kṛṣṇa nāma tattva tahim̐ ॥7॥
govinda gopāḻa ādi sāra ।
govinda nāma ṭi mukhya kara ॥8॥
govinde rahichi bahu bhāva ।
govinde rahichi bhakti dhṛva ॥9॥
govinda govinda boli kahi ।
govinda binu ṭi āna nāhim̐ ॥10॥
govinda goṭi ye nāma sāra ।
sakaḻa madhye ṭi sehi vara ॥11॥
govinda nāma ṭi boli kahi ।
sakaḻa tīrtha ye achi tahim̐ ॥12॥
govinda nāma ye boli jāṇa ।
tattve rahichi sehi jñāna ॥13॥
govinda ākṣā dei mote ।
indra ye galā ṭi gupate ॥14॥
govinda vāṇī māna sāra ।
govinda prema ra sambhāra ॥15॥
govinde kahi deli rahi ।
govinda caḻilu āmbhe tahim̐ ॥16॥
govinda jñāna ṭi āmbhe dei ।
caḻuchu govinda bhāve kahi ॥17॥
govinda bhāva ṭi achi jāṇa ।
paripūrṇa ṭi brahma puṇa ॥18॥
govinda govinda govinda ।
jharuchi tahim̐ ye makaranda ॥19॥
se makaranda pāna kari ।
heḻe tarile vraja nārī ॥20॥
se vraja nārī ṅka payara ।
āmbhe ṭi karu namaskāra ॥21॥
ehi govinda nāma dei ।
caḻilu āmbhe bhāvagrāhī ॥22॥

English Translation
Govinda Govinda name as is
Govinda see filled with wisdom is
Govinda Govinda, if you call
Govinda will surely hear that all.
Govinda Puruṣottama’s core –
Govinda as the name spreads galore.
Govinda Govinda, saying thus,
There Indra, Brahmā and Rudra chose
Govinda name keeps them all engrossed –
And they stay in their very ways lost.
Govinda name as there is, know,
Govinda turns Puruṣottama;
Puruṣottama I am though –
In Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s name principle law.
Govinda, Gopāḻa, from among,
Govinda name you make prime along.
Govinda filled with emotion is
Govinda fixed in devotion is
Govinda Govinda, as there is,
Govinda devoid, see nothing is.
Govinda, the one name as there is,
Amongst all, the greatest wealth that is.
Govinda name as that you say
All pilgrimages there inlay.
Govinda name as is said, you know,
That wisdom lies in cardinal law.
Govinda honor giving to me –
Indra how then left in secret see!
Govinda talk here as you enlist –
Govinda love giving you as gift –
Govinda’s words here I am saying
Govinda I am, see now leaving,
Govinda wisdom thus imparting
In Govinda thought am now leaving.
Govinda thought as is there you know –
Again complete is in Brahma.
Govinda, Govinda, Govinda,
Dripping from in there is nectar know
Tasting that mellow nectar potion
Vraja damsels found liberation.
At those Vraja damsels’ very feet –
I, the Supreme, in reverence greet.
With this Govinda name thus giving,
I, the thought insister, am leaving.
